How Florida’s freshwater problems affect your property

Florida is home to many freshwater springs, as well as the Floridan Aquifer, which provides drinking water to 90% of its residents. However, this important resource is facing several serious problems. These issues not only harm the environment but also pose significant risks to your property, safety and quality of life:

Overpumping

Taking too much groundwater from the Floridan Aquifer can lower water levels and reduce the flow of freshwater springs. This can also let saltwater mix with freshwater, which might contaminate drinking water supplies and corrode building materials. Moreover, excessive extraction can cause the ground to sink, damaging buildings and changing natural landscapes.

Algae growth

Runoff from farms and cities adds too many nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, to Florida’s freshwater bodies. This has led to harmful algal blooms that produce toxins dangerous to human health and aquatic life. These blooms contaminate drinking water and places where people swim. Too much algae can also block sunlight, reduce oxygen levels in the water, and harm fish and other aquatic organisms.

Brown-outs

“Brown-outs” happen when spring water turns brown because of more organic material and sediment. This can be caused by less water flow and more pollution. Although it’s not necessarily dangerous, brown-outs can make springs less appealing for recreation and tourism, which can hurt local economies.

These issues could worsen existing construction defects

All these environmental issues are both signs of and contributors to climate change. This phenomenon has increased the frequency and intensity of storms over the past few years, leading to severe flooding in Florida.

Commercial properties in flood-prone areas are at higher risk of water damage, which can disrupt business operations and lead to costly repairs. If your property has poor waterproofing, bad drainage systems or faulty materials, the chances of water and structural damage go up.

If you see any signs of damage, take detailed photos and keep records of all damages and repairs. This documentation will be crucial for your claim. More importantly, get the help you need to navigate the complexities of construction defect litigation and ensure you file your claims on time.
